Matthew Worn – My Story
40-something years old and described as ‘the most un-accountant accountant imaginable’, I’ve had a varied career across a number of industries in New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. I have been fortunate to work in financial/commercial roles for such well-known companies as SKYCITY, Orica, Sacred Hill Wines, George Weston Foods, and Credit Suisse.
Back in the early ‘00s though, I bought into a small wine import business – determined to be my own boss and take on the world. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go as planned, and the experience left me battered and bruised, and a lot poorer. But I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything, as it taught me more about myself and the realities of being in a small business than anything else could have – principles which I have taken into every role I have had since.
The key things I learnt, and that I use for the benefit of other businesses, are;
- Cashflow and cashflow forecasting is king – some say that’s obvious, but so many don’t do it properly, if at all
- Don’t be too proud or afraid to ask for help – this was a particularly tough one for me. You don’t need to stick it out on your own
- Face the reality and deal with it – any plan of action is better than no action at all.
Why Work With Me?
Having worked in and across many industries, from smaller family owned companies to international conglomerates, I have unusually broad experience to bring to your business. I’m corporate but not too corporate; relaxed but not too relaxed; pragmatic and straight forward. I’m likely to be frank and honest with you about my opinion, and will challenge your thinking with a devil’s advocate approach.
The decision to take my advice or suggestions are entirely yours, as ultimately you will be the one held accountable, but I know that in going through a process with me your decisions will be more considered and thought through.
